This wave was created for “Anthropocene Transmissions,” a nuclear-themed invitational exhibition. It was inspired by recent research out of UC Santa Barbara on deep ocean disposal of industrial waste off Southern California, including DDT and radioactive waste. During my own research process, I learned about microbial mats and I worked to recreate them with a layered effect around the barrels.

This is the only wave so far that includes the human figure. I think of my own ambivalence in a lake or the ocean at night, where my sense of sight is limited by the darkness, I have to trust what is beneath the surface of the water, and my senses are heightened.

“Dawn Patrol” is a term that describes getting up extremely early to go surfing and catch the good waves and maybe an empty beach. This colorful dawn-like wave was created for the Society of American Mosaic Artists’ 100 Moments Project, a traveling mosaic exhibition (size restricted to 6” x 6”).

This is the wave that started it all. It was meant to be a simple study for another idea, but as I used glass to replicate water, then began layering the glass for the foam and white water, something clicked in my head and heart. I have been making waves ever since.
My layering, cutting, andamento and knowledge of wave shapes, values and hues has grown since then, but I still enjoy the composition and stylized nature of this first wave. I found perfectly steaky glass for the sky, and there was a looseness with which I selected various glass shapes and hues to build the wave. This wave still hangs in my studio where it inspires me and I am reminded daily of all the small lessons I learned from it.
